Banking Services

Accessing a reliable bank account is essential in effectively managing personal finances. Sweden is part of the European Economic Area (EEA) and its currency is Swedish Krona (SEK/Kr).

Bank Account

To open a bank account, you will need to visit a branch and bring with you:

  • Documents demonstrating residence status and employment

  • Swedish ID card (personal number)

Different banks often require different additional documents so it may be worthwhile checking what is required ahead of time.

Examples of Swedish banks include:

Bank ID and SWISH

Bank ID is a verification system used to verify and sign online documents via a mobile app (available on Google Play and App Store). When you open your new bank account you can ask your bank to start the procedure for Bank ID. A Swedish personal number, a valid identity document and a functioning mobile number with internet access are required.

SWISH is a mobile payment service very commonly used in Sweden, making paying friends and small purchases easier. You will need a phone number and Bank ID to create an account.

Moving with family

As most banks require proof of employment, if your partner does not work, obtaining a bank account for your partner will be more difficult. It is still possible and you need to talk with the respective bank and they might ask some questions before opening the account.
